Italian police had received a call from the neighbors concerning “loud cries” coming from an elderly couple’s home. When they arrived, they found the two elderly people crying out of sheer loneliness and depression, and decided to cook them a meal.
The golden years, it’s the phrase many people use to describe the elderly, and it suggests that this period will be one of the best in your lifetime. However, a sad reality that comes with this timeframe is losing contact with many friends and family or watching them pass away. Loneliness can have drastic consequences on anybody, and research has shown it significantly increases the likelihood of depression—something that Michele and Jole know very well.
In 2016, when Roman policemen received a call about loud cries coming from the apartment of a elderly couple, it was natural for them to believe someone was hurt, or worse. However, when they arrived at the scene, the injuries the police found weren’t physical, but 84-year-old Michele and 94-year-old Jole were, in fact, crying out in pain, emotional pain. The couple was desperately lonely, and they had apparently just been watching news reports of attacks and child abuse—the elderly couple was devastated as to why everything was so negative.
The couple went on to tell the police how lonely it was when their neighbors were away on vacation. With no one else to talk to, it appears that their isolation got the best of them, and the negative news story touched on some emotions they had buried deep inside. According to the police department that updated their Facebook page with an explanation of the visit, the police offered to cook a meal for the couple after asking if they could step into their kitchen.
When the elderly couple accepted the kind officers’ gracious invitation, what they found was a little disturbing. The police saw just a few old grapes and decided to call over an ambulance to check on the couple’s health. While they waited for paramedics to arrive, the officers did the best that they could with the available ingredients—they cooked a simple meal with spaghetti, butter, and cheese.
“There is not a crime. Jole and Michele are not victims of scams and no thief entered the house—there is no one to save,” the police wrote on Facebook.

The post soon went viral and many netizens praised the police for their kindness. One of them wrote, “One act of kindness may well see this couple through many months with the thought that a couple of strangers took the time to share a little time with them.”
Another wrote, “Their loneliness and despair were assuaged by two angels of the night dressed in blue! Thank you for your humanity, caring, and thoughtfulness!!”
During this holiday season, use this couple’s pain as a reminder to never forget about the loved ones in your family. No one should spend their golden years crying alone, so please, give your grandmother a call this year!
